Last year my favourite fold was the origami fold. I am using that a fair bit this year too, along with the Crooked Cape fold that I showed on youtube a while back, but the fold I’m truly embracing is the Padfold! The simple, quick, padfolded flat cloth diaper has really won me over.
My guy wets mostly upfront, and I love how I can utilize the bulky seamed edges of my flats to provide more absorption up front when padfolded. And since some of my flats are larger, I can fold the seamed edges inwards to reduce the “rise” of the pad, and provide even more absorbency up front while keeping the back smooth and bulk-free.

If your flats have serged edges, put them at the front of the diaper to avoid “shelf butt” at the back. It gives more absorption up front, too! Especially when folded in like this.
I had never really noticed the versatility of Padfolding before. If I assemble a padfold and tuck it inside a cover, ready to go, my husband will happily reach for it. It’s great for caregivers, and for stuffing in pockets. In fact, the bumGenius Elemental Joy diapers are just that- pocket diapers with padfolded flats as inserts. I now love flat diapers after giving them a try during last year’s challenge. My latest discovery is Green Mountain Diapers Cloth-eez Organic birdseye cotton half flats. I pad fold them and layer them on top of a hemp insert in our pocket diapers. It is very trim & a quick absorber that fills the whole pocket on the largest rise setting perfectly. They will also be perfect starter diapers for when grandson arrives in January! Bonus: I bought them pre-loved from the GMD Mamas BST on FB for a good price!
I’ve always wanted to try GMD flats and prefolds. They get such great reviews!
