We all feel it, that mom guilt that comes when we want to spend money on ourselves. It makes us put things back on the rack or shelf and walk away. We tend to forego things like pedicures and haircuts, new makeup and clothes. Why? Because “our kids come first” and every dollar we spend on ourselves we view as money taken from our children. Perhaps that’s why you haven’t yet invested in Nursing Apparel, and I’m here to give you 6 reasons why you should.

Why Spend the Money on Nursing Apparel?
You could spend it on dozens of things for your baby, right? But here’s the thing- nursing apparel isn’t just for you! It’s actually for your baby too. And when done smart, a few key pieces of quality nursing apparel can really stretch across your entire wardrobe. Buying high quality items are a smarter investment because you can resell them later or save them for your next pregnancy. Their sturdy design and material means that they’ll still be in great shape down the road, where the cheaper versions might not even last you one round. I’ve had maternity clothes fall apart mid-pregnancy because I cheaped out on the good stuff. Inconvenient, and not at all a money saver.
Here are 6 great reasons to spend the money on Nursing Apparel!
1. It can be worn as Maternity Wear
As much as we would all LIKE to not have to spend money on maternity clothes, eventually you are just too damn big not to. So do it smart, and start investing in maternity pieces that double as nursing wear! That way you get longevity out of your clothing, and can start to build a stash of nursing tops and dresses before baby even arrives.
2. It makes Nursing Easier
Breastfeeding is hard. It’s a huge adjustment! You are consumed with working out the kinks and getting into a solid routine with your little one, and I’m a firm believer in doing anything that makes it easier. The truth is, nursing apparel DOES make it easier! For the first few weeks you are literally nursing ALL THE TIME. You pop that boob out constantly, am I right? Because you have to nurse on demand in order to build your milk supply. Whether you are at home, or out in public, having clothing that’s designed to help you access your breasts instead of hinder them, is much more practical and much less stressful.
You’ve probably already bought a great nursing bra (this one is my personal fav)- use it to it’s fullest with nursing tops.

My Momzelle ‘Amanda’ nursing top is sleeveless and great in layers. Momzelle has sizes from XS to 2XL and my plus size body is accommodated well.
3. Nursing Apparel makes you feel good
This one might sound weird, but stay with me. Nursing apparel is designed with your post-partum body in mind. It actually fits you well, despite the fact that your body isn’t quite how you remember it to be! I feel fabulous in my nursing tops. I don’t shy away from the mirror, and I get many compliments from my friends and family. Of all the clothes in my wardrobe, my nursing tops flatter me the most. Post partum depression, baby blues, and just the general stress of being a mom to a brand new dependant: these are all things that can make you feel down. Something as simple as looking good and feeling comfortable can help lift you up- even just a little.
4. It can keep things discreet
Some of us are “nurse wide open without a care” people, and that’s a beautiful thing that I treasure and respect, but it’s not for everyone. Many women are not comfortable nursing without a cover, and many babies are not comfortable nursing UNDER a cover. The great thing about nursing apparel is that it’s for ALL of us. If modesty while breastfeeding is a concern for you, breastfeeding tops will help you feel confident, and baby feel comfortable, while nursing in public. Most people have no idea that I’m nursing when I wear my nursing tops.
5. It’s perfect for Babywearing
Well thought out nursing apparel provides simple ease of access and is therefore an invaluable component of Babywearing. If you intend to give babywearing in the 4th trimester a go, I highly recommend using nursing apparel. Many babies feel the instict to nurse once you pop them in the carrier, and it’s so much easier for mom if she can pop baby onto the breast without having to un-wrap, and un-dress, and then re-wrap. In fact, that would get so old real quick.
6. There’s a style for every occasion
I’m a brand ambassador for Momzelle, and I can tell you they have thought of every occasion that needs nursing apparel. Have you ever had to go to a formal function while nursing a baby? I went to a wedding when Little was 6 weeks old. I couldn’t find a dress anywhere that would allow me to nurse so I bought a strapless one and popped my boobs out the top every 45 minutes under a blanket. It was not convenient. It was not fun. The blanket fell off a lot and I was apologizing to the bride for stealing the show (okay, so no one really cared but it makes for a funny line in a blog). My point is, I wish I had one of the fabulous nursing dresses for that wedding so that it would have been a total non-issue.
