Calgary Cloth Diaper Depot recently contacted me for a review of one of their diapers and I was excited to try the AMP One Size- a diaper I haven’t used before. While I’ve long been of the opinion that AMP’s inserts and boosters are some of the best on the market, I had never actually tried their diaper cover itself. I’ve been using this diaper now almost daily for well over a month and have tested it thoroughly. How did it fare? Read on!

We received one AMP One Size pocket diaper, a 2 ply bamboo insert, a 2 ply hemp insert and a 2 ply hemp booster for our review

The Details

This review is of a few different items used interchangeably.

AMP One Size Duo Pocket Diaper:

Fits from 7lbs to 38 lbs
Adjustable Rise snaps
Two rows of waist snaps
Fleece lined for a stay dry feel with a front-open pocket
Can be used as a cover by laying inserts on top of the pocket

The diaper cover is made of 100% polyester PUL and has a super soft micro-fleece pocket-style lining. The pocket opens at the front, fits my large hands well, and was very easy to stuff. You can use the cover as an all-in-two by foregoing stuffing altogether, and laying the insert on top. This diaper has two rows of waist snaps that can adjust the width around tummy and thighs separately. The snaps are deliberately placed at slight angles, since most babies are more narrow at the waist than the hips/thighs.

An adjustable 2×2 rise allows for 3 different sizes – small, medium and large. As a one size diaper, this is intended for use from birth to potty. Along the elastic lines there is soft gathering of material, giving a ruffled appearance. Elastics are featured on both the tummy and back of the diaper, to prevent leaks and drooping. This gives it a very snug and neat appearance and allows for a very good fit. The leg elastics are gentle but effective, and the ruffling shows some of the soft fleece lining.

2 ply AMP Duo Inserts:

Available in Bamboo (70% Bamboo/30% Organic Cotton) or Hemp (55% Hemp/45% Organic Cotton)
2 layers of fabric, serged along the edges with blue thread for hemp and green for bamboo
Can be half or tri-folded
Can be boosted with bamboo or hemp boosters, sold seperately

The inserts and booster are buttery soft. Both the hemp and bamboo inserts are very trim and work beautifully in a trifold for the smallest rise, giving you 6 layers of absorption.

You can half-fold for the medium and large rise settings and have more room this way for doubling the inserts, if you so desire. The hemp is more absorbent than the bamboo.

Sizing and Fit

These are truly one size diapers and should fit a newborn on the smallest rise. When compared to Littlest’s other newborn diapers from when he was born, I feel comfortable suggesting that they’d fit a newborn baby fine at 7lbs. On the largest setting, I can also fit this on my other son, Little (he’s 3 years old and potty trained, but doesn’t mind trying on diapers for fit checks). He is 30lbs and currently wearing size 3T cloths, and this diaper fits him nicely with some room to spare.

Littlest is 9 months old and 16lbs at time of testing, and still fits on the smallest rise with a trifolded insert. He does fit the medium rise as well, but I feel that the small gives us a trimmer, sag-free fit. I love the tummy elastic, as Littlest is just now starting to walk and when he’s standing up there are absolutely no gaps or drooping.

Performance

We thoroughly tested the AMP One Size pocket diaper with many daytime uses, overnights, car rides and while babywearing. This diaper held up to every challenge that I threw at it! My preference was to use the 2 ply hemp insert, as Littlest is a heavy wetter. This was perfect for us for daytime use. The Bamboo insert also worked well along with the hemp booster.

When we went out and about, I popped the hemp booster in for extra protection in the car seat and baby carrier. I never had a single leak, and there was always absorbency to spare when using the hemp insert and hemp booster. For overnight use, we doubled up with both the Hemp and Bamboo inserts, along with the booster. This gave us a solid 12 hours, leak free. The rise had to be moved to medium setting for overnight because of the bulk of the two inserts, but it worked fine.

I was lucky(?) enough to try this diaper with a huge poopslosion. I’m not sure what he ate, but one particular diaper change was massive. This diaper didn’t have any issues containing the mess, and the micro-fleece was simple to clean off in the toilet with my dunk and swish method.

The pocket opens at the front, which is kind of awesome because no matter how messy the poop got I never got any on me trying to unstuff the diaper.

We did try this AMP one size diaper several times as an all-in-two as well. The idea here is to lay the insert inside the cover instead of stuffing. You can air out the cover between use, and then replace only the soiled insert with a clean one. Littlest is a heavy wetter and so the micro-fleece was not dry and clean under the insert when I used it this way. To make me more comfortable with the idea of re-use, I sprayed it with my Wipe Spray to freshen it up and then air dried it. It worked pretty well this way, but I prefer to use it as a pocket to get the soft stay-dry benefits. If you prefer natural fibres against your baby’s skin, then laying the insert on top is the way to go.

What I love

There’s a lot to love about this diaper. This is the first “gathered elastic” style diaper that I have used, and I wasn’t sure how I’d like it. It’s great! Here are some things I really loved:

The diaper fits my baby perfectly
The micro-fleece is very soft and hasn’t pilled at all even with at least a dozen washes
The hemp inserts are amazing, super soft, and very absorbent
The inserts and boosters transfer well to other brands of diapers and I use them all through my stash
The one size claim seems to be very accurate and should fit fine from birth to potty
The materials are high quality and the price point is reasonable

What I love less

I can’t find a whole lot of criticism for this diaper, as it really impressed me. There are a few things I might change though if I had the chance. Here is what I love less:

There are only 2 columns of rise snaps. A center snap would prevent the insert from bulging, especially on the medium setting.
The washing instructions on the packaging are outdated and ignore a great deal of current research
The inserts are sold seperately, but their 2ply hemp insert is a clear winner in my book and could be sold along with each cover with great success

Final Thoughts

The best compliment that I can give this diaper is to tell you that shortly after I received it for review, I bought more. I really like these diapers. The fit on my Littlest is one of the best out of all the diapers that I have tried and I could see my self quite happily cloth diapering with an entire stash of these from birth to potty. I love the inserts, and already had some in my stash which I use in many of my other pocket diapers (they fit perfect in Funky Fluff too).

As Littlest gets older, I’ll update this review to include any other findings along the way; but I’m really optimistic. My experience cloth diapering with dozens of of different brands and two different children (with different needs) tells me that this particular AMP One Size Duo Pocker Cloth Diaper is going to continue to do very well in my collection.
