I love my IKEA Cloth Diapers! Wait, Ikea makes cloth diapers?? Yes they do, but they probably don’t know that they do. The “Himmelsk” cotton muslin squares at Ikea are marketed as burp cloths and sold in packs of 2 for about 6.99. Cloth diapering moms everywhere are using them as Flat Diapers and here’s why!

What are these mythical IKEA diapers?
You’re in IKEA all the time anyways, admit it, so I know that you are totally curious about these little cotton muslin squares. Well, next time, sate your curiosity and pick up a pack of 2 Himmelsks from the children’s department! They are only $6.99 and come in an adorable Grey Stars and Plain White duo. The fabric feels very non-absorbent at first touch, but they will fluff up nicely after a prep wash. The Himmelsk is 28″ x 28″ and shrinks to a hair shy of 27″ x 27″. It is made of 100% cotton, and IKEA cotton is all from more sustainable sources. This means that the cotton is either recycled, or grown with less water, fertilizers, and pesticides than usual, and all the while increasing profit margins for the farmers. Also, no optical brightener has been used.

IKEA muslin squares are more than just diapers, of course. As marketed, they do make fantastic burp cloths and also nursing blankets. I use mine for many different things like cleaning up spills (like that one tear jerking time when I spilled a bottle of breast milk) and even as a giant wipe for massive poops when I’m all out of wipes. Okay that was only once, but it counts. You could totally cut one up into wipes too if that’s your jam, but I’d prefer flannel for that.

How to use them as Diapers
Here’s the best part: you use them just like any flat diaper! You can pad fold them and then lay them into a cover or stuff them into a pocket diaper. You can fold it into my favourite “Origami Fold” and fasten it with a snappi or boingo, or just hold the ends down with the cover. Just about any square flat diaper fold can be easily accomplished with these babies.

They are slightly smaller than my other flat diapers, such as my Osocozy Bamboo Flats, and work perfectly at the newborn stage without as much bulk during the tiny folding.

Washing is easy as pie, because they are one single layer. A single layer of fabric is easy to clean, so they make great overnight diapers (just double them up). The heavy, all-night urine smell is very easy to rid from one layer since it isn’t hindered by stacking and stitching. These dry nicely in the dryer on medium heat without any issues. Also, I used them during the Handwashing Challenge this year and they were very easy to wash in a bucket with a plunger.

Not the only Cotton Muslin Flats out there!
You might not realize, because they aren’t overly abundant, but there are other cotton muslin options on the market. Disana makes some, and so do Rearz. By the way, Rearz muslin flats are SUPER cheap right now. Some are on sale for $1 each!
There are also Bamboo Muslin flats on the market as well, and while a bit pricier than cotton, they are incredibly soft and slightly more absorbent.

IKEA Himmelsk burp cloths make fantastic cloth diapers.
I have never been in an Ikea because there is not one real close to me. These are cute and cheap. How do they compare to a Walmart or Target FST? I did buy 6 preloved GMD Cloth-eez OS muslin flat diapers and like the double weave quality. LO is too tall at this point for them Origami folded. During the next flat challenge I may give them a go pad folded even though they are super thick and fluffy that way.
I love using flats with my baby, but I’ve never tried muslin ones, so I think I will have to!
